Florida State University Law Review

For Authors

Submit Manuscript

The Florida State University Law Review welcomes unsolicited manuscripts on topics of interest to the legal profession. The Law Review acknowledges that unsolicited manuscripts may be submitted to other journals. All pieces will be evaluated as expeditiously as possible, but the Law Review assumes no responsibility for the return of unsolicited manuscripts. The Law Review gives great deference to an author’s work, but reserves the right to determine the final form in which articles will be published. Preference is given to manuscripts under 25,000 words, inclusive of both text and footnotes.

New Submissions
Manuscripts should conform to the following specifications:

  • File Format: Microsoft Word .docx
  • Attachments: Cover letter and CV preferred
  • Document Formatting: 12-point font (or larger) and footnotes preferred
  • Citation Formatting: Citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (22nd ed.) with citations to Florida sources conforming to the Florida State University Law Review Florida Style Manual (8th ed.).

Submissions should be made via Scholastica. All articles will be evaluated as expeditiously as possible, but please submit an expedite request to the journal if necessary. If you have questions, please email our Executive Article Selection Editor for Volume 54, Kaitlyn Gazzara, at kmg24@fsu.edu.

Article Review Criteria
No single formula can encapsulate the Law Review’s selection process as a whole. Factors such as author credentials and publication history are strongly de-emphasized in favor of subject matter, style, depth and uniqueness of argument, and quality of research. The initial quality of a submission, particularly attention to detail in footnotes, can have a noticeable subjective effect on the review of an article.

For those looking to save time or money on submissions and target appropriate journals, the Law Review will attempt to keep authors fully informed of our review policies. At present, the following categories of articles will not be accepted:

  • Articles from non-FSU students without a J.D. or LL.M.

Without having an official policy excluding them, the following categories of articles historically have had a low probability of receiving an offer:

  • Articles less than 40 pages double-spaced
  • Book Reviews

Publication Offers
The Law Review does not have a fixed policy regarding offer deadlines. We will generally not give offers on expedited-review pieces earlier than the deadline which directed our review, as we recognize that this disrupts the planning processes of other journals.
